A common skin cancer. A clear next step.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common skin cancer. It usually grows slowly and rarely spreads, but untreated cancer can grow deeper and damage nearby tissue. A skin biopsy confirms the diagnosis.

At Aesthetix Dermatology, we help you understand the findings and the next step. Treatment is selected for your individual cancer, with attention to complete removal, healing, and follow-up skin checks.

Signs to Have Checked

Nodular basal cell carcinoma
Nodular BCC: clinical example

A shiny or pearly bump

A new, slow-growing bump may look shiny, skin-colored, pink, brown, or darker. Tiny visible blood vessels may appear on its surface.

Basal cell carcinoma can look different across skin tones. A persistent bump deserves an examination, even when it does not hurt.

Superficial basal cell carcinoma
Superficial BCC: clinical example

A patch that persists

Some basal cell cancers appear as a scaly patch or an area that resembles a scar. They may be mistaken for an irritated spot or rash.

A spot that remains, grows, or repeatedly changes should be evaluated. Appearance alone cannot confirm or rule out skin cancer.

Ulcerated basal cell carcinoma
Ulcerated BCC: clinical example

A sore that returns

A spot may bleed, crust, or seem to heal before opening again. Repeated bleeding or a sore that does not heal is a reason to seek care.

Your dermatologist may recommend a biopsy. If a biopsy has already confirmed cancer, bring the report so treatment can be planned.

Clinical appearance varies. Photos and descriptions cannot diagnose skin cancer; an examination and, when indicated, a biopsy are needed.

Explore Treatment Options

Select an option to see what you may discuss with your dermatologist.

Mohs surgery

Precise removal for selected cancers

Mohs surgery removes thin layers and checks the tissue edges under a microscope during the procedure.

Discuss Your Care
  • Often considered for higher-risk cancers or areas where preserving healthy tissue matters.
  • May be appropriate for cancers that return or have borders that are hard to define.
  • The surgeon discusses wound repair after the examined margins are clear.

Your biopsy findings and the tumor’s location help determine whether Mohs is appropriate.

Removal with a surrounding margin

Standard excision removes the cancer with a margin of surrounding skin. The tissue is sent to a laboratory for examination.

Discuss Your Care
  • May be suitable for many basal cell cancers with a lower risk of recurrence.
  • Local anesthesia numbs the area during the procedure.
  • Further treatment may be needed if cancer is found at the specimen’s edges.

We explain the planned procedure, wound closure, possible scarring, and follow-up.

Alternatives for carefully selected cases

Other treatments may be considered for certain small, superficial cancers or when surgery is unsuitable.

Discuss Your Care
  • Scraping with heat treatment may suit selected low-risk lesions.
  • Prescription topical treatment or other local therapy may be appropriate for some superficial cancers.
  • Radiation or specialist-directed medication may be discussed when the situation requires it.

These options are not interchangeable. Your dermatologist explains suitability and coordinates additional care when needed.

Your care is individualized. Suitability and availability are discussed at your visit; some treatments may require coordinated specialist care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is basal cell carcinoma serious?

It is highly treatable when found early and treated appropriately. It rarely spreads, but it can grow into nearby tissue and become harder to treat if left alone. A confirmed diagnosis needs a treatment discussion even if the spot seems small.

Do all basal cell cancers need Mohs?

No. Mohs may be recommended for certain locations, recurrent cancers, or higher-risk features. Standard excision and selected other treatments may be appropriate in other situations. Your dermatologist explains why the recommended approach fits your biopsy findings.

What if the spot disappeared after my biopsy?

The visible surface may be gone while cancer cells remain beneath or around the biopsy site. A biopsy does not always remove the entire cancer. Keep the recommended treatment appointment and bring the pathology report if it was performed elsewhere.

Can treatment be done without surgery?

Sometimes, for carefully selected superficial or low-risk cancers, or when surgery is not suitable. Creams and other local treatments are not appropriate for every basal cell cancer. The diagnosis, depth, location, and likelihood of recurrence guide that decision.

Will treatment leave a scar?

A scar is expected after surgery, and other treatments can also change the skin’s appearance. The wound size, location, repair method, and your healing affect the result. We discuss repair and aftercare before treatment; the final appearance takes time to develop.

Will I need skin checks after treatment?

Yes. A history of basal cell carcinoma increases the risk of another skin cancer. Your dermatologist recommends a follow-up schedule based on your history. Tell the office about a new growth or a change at the treated site between visits.

Take the next step in basal cell cancer care.

A confirmed diagnosis can bring questions about treatment and healing. Book a visit to review your biopsy, understand the recommended approach, and plan follow-up with Aesthetix Dermatology.
