Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy

We apply a topical treatment of Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) to the targeted skin field for an hour before activating it with a specific wavelength of light. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) can be applied to treat large areas of cumulative sun damage and precancerous growths. It can also be implemented to target certain superficial skin cancers. Your physician will determine if this treatment modality is beneficial to your skin cancer treatment and/or prevention goals and he will oversee your care and follow-up in office.

Special considerations for this treatment will be reviewed by your provider. Several treatments may be required; however, in optimal circumstances, each individual PDT treatment removes 70-80% of visible actinic keratoses, or precancers. Patient cooperation and compliance is significant as the topical preparation can be further activated by sunlight. We counsel all patients on ways to avoid the sun for 24-48 hours after this procedure and schedule your procedure with attention to your lifestyle and personal agenda as downtime varies for each individual.
